The Birthday Party

Image
It is not about regular Birthday Parties. Its about Harold Pinter 's play The Birthday Party.    To see the original task click on the image.   Here is my observation regarding this work.... * Lulu's Character:  Lulu's character is a minor character in the play. In the movie it is difficult to focus on more than one or two character at a time. When Lulu was performing her character at the same time other important situation were going on parallel. So her scenes are omitted. * The effect of Menace:    The film successfully giving the effect of menace by using some techniques like..... - Knocking door - Water pouring - Ringing of Bell ...The same feeling I was not able to feel when reading the play. * The Lurking Danger:  I feel the lurking danger when the scene of Stanley and the two strangers was shown. The entry of McCain and Goldberg itself suggests the lurking danger for the family and Stanley. ...The same feeling was not...

Waiting for ..............?

Image
To see original task click on the image. Waiting for Godot.. Not anyone else... ;-) Waiting for Godot is a play written by Samuel Beckett. It is originally written in French language. First performed on the stage on January 9,1953. It has only five characters: Vladimir, Estragon, Lucky, Pozzo and Boy. Genre of the play is tragicomedy. It is two Act's play.    Here I am discussing my observations of the play... As the play starts there is one tree and a stone nearby. The tree is almost dried. Here are two photographs to compare:  In one Picture there is a rising sun which gives hope to the two persons who are longing. And in the second picture only two leaves are there which suggests ray of hope.    The whole day of Vladimir and Estragon goes in waiting for the unknown person namely Godot. Night comes. At night as the moon rises it suggests that this night came to be ended. And their hope doesn't die. In the movie version of the play...

Studying Verginia Woolf's 'To The Lighthouse'

Image
Virginia Woolf has written one of the finest novel To The Lighthouse in 1927. Its a part of our study. As we study the novel, we found too much controversies. Because today's world and people's lifestyle and the most important thing, the position of woman is different in today's world. In this novel she has focused on two ladies characters; Mrs. Ramsay and Lily Briscoe.  Here I am going to discuss some of the main topics of this novel. (To see the real study task click here.)   'What' a writer wants to say? The writer has used Stream of Consciousness technique to give her thoughts a material structure. She has described the complexity of human relations in her novel. How we are forced to live as per the rules of society. Relations are also artificial.  The complexity which is seen in real life, is having a shape by the writer's ability to write words without any reference.    Mostly she has stressed upon the freedom of thoughts of a woman arti...

Modernist Poems Short But Dramatic

Image
Part of our Study Task Modernist Poems of selected poets are analyzed here. Poets have written short poems but very dramatic. Means they are very much effective. Let's see one by one. 1. The Embankment   Once, in finesse of fiddles found I ecstasy, In a flash of gold heels on the hard pavement. Now see I That warmth’s the very stuff of poesy. Oh, God, make small The old star-eaten blanket of the sky, That I may fold it round me and in comfort lie. By T. E. Hulme (1883-1917)  Analysis : First, a short paraphrase of the poem: on London’s Embankment (an area well-known for homeless people sleeping rough), a ‘fallen gentleman’ reflects on his past and how he found pleasure in worldly social activities (the ‘finesse of fiddles’ suggesting musical gatherings, such as dances) and beautiful women – probably (given the ‘flash of gold heels on the hard pavement ‘) courtesans or prostitutes. But now, down on his luck and most probably sleeping rough ...

Movie & It's Voice

Image
We have seen 2 movies to understand the post colonial literature. As it was a group screening, we have a group task to give our views regarding both movies. Here are my views..... Click here to see Main Task of Study. Midnight's Children Midnight's Children by Deepa Mehta (released in 2013) is based on the novel by Salman Rushdie written in 1981 . The movie observes and represents the time of India's Freedom. Children who born on the exact time of India's freedom 15th August, 1947, Midnight at 12 o'clock, have special powers. That's why the title is relevant with the theme. The main theme of the movie is Magical Realism , which is very significant.  Rural India, Social Status and a ' Birth' in particular class of a society plays vital role in one's life. Mix-exchange of babies and how their identities lost is high lighted. Political satire is also could be seen. 1975's Emergency and it's effects are shown very symboli...

Is It Possible to Compare?

Image
Two Great critic, philosopher, writer Nietzsche and T.S.Eliot Is it possible to compare their thoughts? Big Question but Let's Try....   (Part of study task)      Nietzsche's style is evocative. His Philosophy generates passionate reactions running from love to disgust. Throughout his works he talks about possible Great Human Beings who serve as an example of people who would follow his philosophical ideals. These ideals are in Nietzsche's words called The Free Spirit, The Philosopher of the Future, The True Artist or The Ubermensch.          He says that "God is Dead." He says Man is a rope, tied between super human and beasts.      T.S.Eliot tries to find out answers of modern malaise from Upanishads, Buddhism and Christianity. In that sense he seems to be regressive comparatively Nietzsche.         But the theme which is described in The Waste ...

Try to Deconstruct.......

Image
Being a student of Department of English, we have a topic to learn in our study, that is " Deconstruction ". Derrida  a famous critic has given this term.  What is Deconstruction ?       In the criticism of literature, Deconstruction is a theory and practice of reading which questions and claims to ‘subvert’ or ‘undermine’ the assumption that the system of language provides grounds that are adequate to establish the boundaries, the coherence or unity, and the determinate meaning of a literary text. Typically, a deconstructive reading sets out to show the conflicting forces within the text itself to dissipate the seeming definiteness of its structure and meaning into indefinite array of incompatibility and undecidable possibilities.       Derrida was the most influential philosopher in 70s and 80s of last century. His philosophy is the further extension of structuralism and is better called as Post-Structurali...

If I were a Structuralist...

Image
As a part of our study, (click here to see the study part) we learn STRUCTURALISM and how structuralist do their criticism.       Almost all literary theorists since Aristotle have emphasized the importance of structure. ''Structuralist criticism" now designated the practice of critics who analyze literature on the explicite model of structuralist linguistics. This mode of criticism is a part of a large movement, French Structuralism in the 1950s by the cultural anthripologist Claude Levi-Strauss, who analyzed, on Saussure's liguistic model.       Saussure has said about linguistic structure in which he has emphasized on three terms:  1. Parole : Which is individual utterence, a word . Every person uses different words as per their birth place for the word "Water"  2. Langue : Which is perticular meaning of a perticular word.  3. Language : So many Langue combinely made a Language. A meaningful way ...
